The Myth of Complex Parts

The primary ROI driver for 5-axis machining is not cutting complex impellers or aerospace contours (simultaneous 5-axis). The primary driver is "3+2" positional machining on relatively simple prismatic parts.

Setup Reduction

A standard block that requires features on 5 sides takes 3 to 5 separate setups on a standard 3-axis vertical mill. Each setup requires an operator to open the doors, unclamp the part, flip it, clean the vise, clamp it, probe the new datum, and press cycle start. During this time, the machine is not cutting. Machine Hourly Rate costs accumulate without revenue generation.

A 5-axis machine accesses 5 sides of the part in a single clamping. The time previously spent on physical setups is reclaimed as pure cutting time. Part handling errors (chip in the vise, incorrect seating) are eliminated, drastically reducing scrap rates on high-value materials.
