Thermal Expansion.

Calculate the linear dimensional growth of a part due to temperature fluctuations during the machining or inspection process.

Deviation from standard 68°F (20°C)

Dimensional Change (ΔL)

The Mathematics

Metrology standards dictate parts are inspected at 68°F (20°C). A part machined at 90°F will shrink when brought to the inspection room.

Formula

ΔL = Length × Coefficient of Thermal Expansion × ΔT
